This course consists of detailed practical skill training, on lot classroom style training, home study reading material, and quiz.

Prerequisites: The minimum learning age is 18 for the New Rider Skills Course. Students must carry a Class 5 or better license (GDL permitted) as a prerequisite to participate, thus expected to know the provincial and municipal rules of the road and the contents of the Class 5 Handbook. Students are required to read the Class 6 Handbook prior to coming to class (as the home study portion, links are available on the Links page of our website.  If this is not done, students may be required to register into another course at the students expense). The experience and ability to currently balance and ride a bicycle is also required (if this is not done, and balance is an issue, students may be required to register into another course at the students expense). Students are not required to have the completed written portion of the Class 6, however it will be required to register for your road test.

**Completion of the New Rider Skills Course qualifies for insurance discounts.**

**The Edge Motorcycle Training Inc. and our instructors are Alberta Transportation Licensed.**

The course includes group style instruction and discussions, skill demonstrations, skill practice with immediate feedback provided.  This course is designed as progressive learning of each skill/component, thus safety standards require that each student must successfully complete each skill/component prior to proceeding to the next.

If the skill requirements can not be met during the allotted time of the exercise, this creates a safety issue, and the student will be offered more private instruction prior to continuing with a new course date (used as a continuance of their current course).  In this case, the student is not denied the service, it is just redesigned to more appropriately suit the individual learning pace and to ensure safety standards are met.  Should that student decide that they don’t want to proceed with the new individual learning pace, our service and any obligation will be considered fulfilled and complete.  If the student attends the course, then during the course decides they do not wish to continue for any reason, our service and any obligation will be considered fulfilled and complete.

The course is made available to all students that are in attendance at the time of the course, we do not deny service to anyone in attendance of the course, with exception to those that violate the Driver Training Contract.  Once the student is in attendance of the course, and the course has commenced, our service and any obligation to the student will be considered fulfilled and complete.

Elements of instruction include:

  • operating the motorcycle controls and clutch effectively
  • rider vision
  • slow speed control
  • high speed control
  • shifting gears
  • signals and signalling
  • braking effectively
  • push steering (counter steering)
  • effective cornering techniques
  • collision avoidance techniques
  • group riding
  • Class 6 License preparation
  • custom designed drills for skill development
  • practice, practice, and more practice.

Motorcycle for road test will only be available to students 18 years of age or older that carry a Class 5 or greater license, and skills that are to a safe standard and instructor approved. Extra practice is available for road test preparation. As of 2009, lot/road tests in Alberta are not conducted during the course, they are booked for a separate day (possibly the following day). When you are ready to book your road test, you will follow the step by step booking instructions that we will provide you during the course. Keep in mind that you will need your course completion certificate to book your road test appointment, and it cannot be done prior to completion of the course (to avoid wrongful or accidental bookings). The day of your test, you will meet the examiner at our facility to conduct your road test. If you would like to view the available testing dates, you may check out the calendar in the Road Test Motorcycle Sign Up. Your included motorcycle use for the road test must be used in 2018. If you plan to use your motorcycle for the road test, then disregard these instructions, and book at your chosen registries office.  Students attending a course at the end of the season, may not have enough time to prepare for the road test on our schedule.

The student gear requirements surpass the minimum standards required by Alberta law, for student safety.  Students must bring or reserve appropriate gear, which includes:

• Properly fitted DOT or better approved Helmet, in good condition.

• Eye protection (helmet visor, eyeglasses, sunglasses, or safety glasses).

• Motorcycle specific full fingered gloves or leather full fingered gloves that cover the wrists, NO dirt bike or cloth gloves.

• Boots that cover the ankle, either motorcycle specific or most hiking boots (with a protective structure) are acceptable. NOT accepted include winter boots, fashion boots, high heeled boots (above 1″), steel toed boots, and shoes or sneakers of any kind.

• Durable jacket which may be specialized riding gear or thick zippered leather jacket. Anything with less protection quality will not be accepted on course.

• Pants must be heavy durable denim jeans or better, without holes or tears, and without pocket jewels or likewise decoration, required. Anything with less protection quality will not be accepted on course.

Please call in advance to inform us if you will be requiring specific riding gear, or have question regarding appropriate gear to use. Please note that we only carry jackets, gloves, and helmets of regular build and sizing with tapered cut.  If the cut and sizing doesn’t suit your body type, you will be responsible for bringing your own appropriate gear.

Students are required to dress appropriate to the weather conditions (eg. cooler weather will require layers of clothing and/or thermal clothing). Rain gear is also appropriate for cooler temperatures as well as wet weather.

The weather (extreme cold or snow) may affect the course schedule, and as a result, a course or partial course may be rescheduled. If a possible reschedule is not an option for you, please book dates later in the year when the risk of this is lower. In the case of adverse weather conditions beyond our control, we do not issue refunds, and will make our best efforts to reschedule students accordingly. We will contact you via email, or phone for same day notice, if there are any changes to the course, therefore your attendance is expected if you don’t hear from us. Courses will run hot, cold, some light snow, rain or shine!

Detailed course preparation instructions will be provided in your registration confirmation email, please read and follow thoroughly.  This is an automatically generated email sent upon registration completion, and are not duplicated.  Please mark our email address registrations@edgemotorcycle.ca and info@edgemotorcycle.ca as priority or VIP in your email settings to ensure that your emails don’t end up in your junk or spam email inboxes, and if you don’t have your confirmation email in your inbox, please search your junk or spam boxes for it (and change your settings immediately).  Any and all changes to the course will be communicated via email.

Please select your course dates appropriately.
